What greyhound trap wins most? ›

Of the eight boxes allocated for each greyhound race*, Box One (red) generated the most winners with 18.5%. This is traditionally the case at nearly all greyhound racetracks simply because the box is the closest to the rail and therefore the quickest route to the winning post.

Drugs are rife and whilst betting is legal on the sport and run at all tracks, there are often cases when races are fixed and even dogs are given substances that makes them underperform. In terms of rules, the limited rules that are on show are enforced by each track and can differ from one track to another.

Animal welfare issues remain of concern in greyhound racing, from the overbreeding of dogs, to problematic training methods, injuries and deaths in racing and training, continued instances of illegal live-baiting, and the fate of unwanted greyhounds.

Although favorites win about 30% of the time at most tracks, that doesn't mean that the one you bet on will come in. I bet favorites if I agree that the dog should be at short odds. But before I bet, I make sure that it's not a false favorite.

Forecast and Tricast Betting

Some lucrative returns can be won by predicting the order of the first two or three greyhounds to cross the winning line. A bet known as a 'forecast' is struck to predict the first and second places, this bet can also be reversed.

The most popular type of trifecta when betting on greyhound racing is a box trifecta which allows your selections to finish in any order, as long as they are still the first three. Alternatively, you can chose to place a stand-out trifecta, where you have to select runners in their correct finishing order.

On November 6, 2018, history was made when 69.06 percent of Florida voters voted “yes” on Amendment 13 to ban commercial greyhound racing in the state that is wagered on. Voter turn-out was large, with 5,407,543 of the 7,830,669 voters voting “yes” to phase out all commercial greyhound racing by the year 2020.

Thousands are bred annually (many more than are needed to race) in an attempt to create the fastest dogs. Cruel methods are often used to dispose of unwanted dogs and the dogs who do survive in the industry are forced to live in cramped crates, pens or fenced enclosures.

In fact, many dogs live a life of deprivation in kennels – kept in pens or crates for up to 23 hours a day. Not to mention those who are injured and/or killed on the racetrack. Greyhounds love to RUN – not race.

High rate of injuries suffered by racing greyhounds

Injuries are a major animal welfare issue as they cause pain, suffering and distress to the affected animals. Various types of injuries are regularly reported including serious bone fractures and muscle injuries.

Underdogs will likely win less than 50 percent of the time, but that doesn't mean they won't be profitable. Recreational bettors often gravitate toward favorites, which can sometimes create value on the underdogs by inflating the lines.

What Happens When Dogs Don't Win? Some “retired” greyhounds are put up for adoption, others are sent to breeding farms, and the fate of many is unknown. The National Greyhound Association, which registers all greyhounds for racing, doesn't keep track of the dogs after they leave the track.
